Church of the Holy Spirit was opened in May of 2003 as a mission parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan.  It is the first of several such church plants planned for the diocese in the opening years of this new century. 

We started in Sparta, Michigan using the former St. Matthews’s parish land and building. We are now on the corner of Post Drive and Pine Island Drive in Belmont, Michigan.

Our current parish numbers a little over 100 and includes members from the former parish, and about 50 members of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in North East Grand Rapids, our Covenant Parish.  These families had indicated their desire to work, pray and give to this new church plant for a minimum of two years.  Their energy and willing service to the new parish have been an essential element in the success of this first year.  We have a full time vicar, Rev. Susan York, placed here by Bishop Robert Gepert to guide and support this new and exciting parish.   Lay leadership in many aspects of this parish has been a hallmark of our success thus far.  We also have evolved into a parish, which is “child friendly” and age diverse, embracing a span of ages from 1-80.  Although our history is evolving, we feel confident in the working of the Holy Spirit in this place in and through us.
