Holy Spirit Episcopal Church is committed to reaching out in service to our neighbors and friends in the community:
Holy Spirit is blessed to be the home of the Explore & Soar Reading Club, an after school reading program founded in 2008 for children in the second and third grades.
Now beginning our 10th year, we have helped children in northern Kent County to improve their reading level by an average of 1.5 years. Students have come to us from Chandler Woods Charter Academy, Comstock Park Public Schools, Sparta Public Schools, and Rockford Public Schools. They are referred by their teachers after the initial Fall reading assessments. Eligible students are those who are struggling to meet grade-level expectations.
Our Reading Club is modeled on the YET program (Youth Education for Tomorrow) from Philadelphia. This program is a very important part of our church’s outreach mission. Many church members support the Reading Club by volunteering to listen to children read, providing snacks and supplies, and through monetary donations.
The Reading Club is free to students and is funded by grants, donations, and individuals, including church members. The program is offered as a service of the Loaves & Fishes Family Center, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. We always welcome and need your financial support. Checks can be made payable to Loaves & Fishes Family Center and mailed to the church, or make a donation via PayPal using a major credit card or PayPal account: all contributions made through the link below go directly to the Reading Club. All or part of your gift may be tax-deductible as a charitable contribution (please check with your tax adviser).

You also can support the Reading Club through the AmazonSmile program (look for Loaves and Fishes Family Center).
