Who We Are

Our church opened in May 2003 as a mission parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan.  It is the first of several such church plants planned for the diocese in the opening years of this new century.

The mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan, as rooted in the Episcopal tradition, is to worship God, to follow Jesus Christ, to grow together in the Holy Spirit, and to serve the world.  Our vision is to live our values and be healthy, mission-focused diverse parishes with innovative, collaborative engagement at all levels.  More on the mission, vision and values of our Diocese can be found on the Diocese's website.

In the beginning, we used the former St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church facilities in Sparta. Our congregation was comprised of members of the former parish, as well as members of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids, our Covenant Parish.  These families had indicated their desire to work, pray and give to the new church plant for a minimum of two years.  Together, their energy and willing service were essential elements to our success.  The Rev. Sue York’s love and support led us for several years, and now the Rev. David Meyers guides us.  Lay leadership in many aspects of our church life has been a hallmark of our success thus far.

In 2005, our congregation moved to its current location at the corners of Post and Pine Island drives in Belmont.  Our building itself has a long history of service to the community:  it has served as home to several different churches in recent years.  The building's core is the old Post School, which served as a one-room schoolhouse for children in this part of Plainfield and Alpine townships from at least 1894 until well into the 20th century.

Today, in the 21st century, our growing congregation is child-friendly and age diverse. We are an active group, involved in the community at many levels.  With Rev. Meyers’ ordination to the priesthood, we look forward to new growth and success.  We at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church feel confident in the continued working of the Holy Spirit, both in and through us.

The Rev. David Meyers is our spiritual leader. Serving as a deacon in many parishes in the Diocese for twenty five years, he was encouraged to consider a call to the priesthood by Bishop Gepert.  He came to Holy Spirit in July 2009, and shepherds the flock through worship, teaching, pastoral care and encouraging the ministry of the people.  Father David is a bi-vocational priest, meaning that in addition to working in the church, he also works in the schools in Greenville.  He lives in Greenville with his wife, Merry Kim.
